Recent School Visit
As Steve & I were at the school today (October 2001), I took a few photos, with some interesting changes
to note. Here they are:
A block - showing recent extension on the end, and also a covered walkway linking A and B
blocks along the bottom end of the old 'tennis courts' (apparently too boggy to do much
sport on these days!).
Reception - now light, airy and with a friendly desk and casual seating area in the
corridor! You can also see scaffolding outside around the front door and portico.
Unfortunately I failed to take a photo of this from the outside, but then I don't
suppose it would be that interesting anyway....
Reception from front entrance - looking the other way. Pupils are currently barred
from passing through the reception area while work on the entrance is in progress.
Rear view, showing the rugby goal posts - though rugby was not on the curriculum in
our day, even the girls play now.
Oak tree and A block - please look at this one, then scroll down to my explanation
below. You really must see this, rather than reading about it!
Menu - school dinners as we knew them are obviously a thing of the past....
Lunch servery - part of the kitchens is now a self-service area.
Dining Room - as it now is. Same place, different look.
Library - looking from near the entrance, down towards the next classroom, which has
now been incorporated into the library as an IT area - you can just see the open door
on the right of the photo.
Library with PCs - again taken from near the entrance, but down to the windows
overlooking the '6th form terrace'.
Hall - now with tiered seating.
Corridor from front entrance - down past the 'staff room' as was. The 'heads of years'
offices' are now there.
Girls showers - yes, we poked our noses in everywhere! All girls will no doubt be as
relieved as I am to learn that communal showers are a thing of the past!
However, Steve says the boys still have to jump in together... but I didn't get a
photo of that!
Now... promise you have already looked at the Oak tree and A block photo? OK then,
you can scroll down...
Oak tree and A block - the Oak Tree was split apart in the Great Storm of 1987 and
the school was unable to save it - eventually it had to be felled. 'A' block huts
were gradually removed, although some lasted into the '90's... so much for temporary
buildings!
